| I hear the shaft is supposed to be way stronger than the prop, strut, rudder, etc..... |

| It is suppose to be. The only thing we can think of for what happened is that whatever we hit, hit the strut causing it to bend then snapping the shaft. Snapped shaft caused the prop to run into the rudder. The prop was hit, which caused it to hit the fiberglass, which you can kind of see in the first pic. I am still amazed that the shaft snapped like it did. A very clean and fast break. |

| Lucky you didn't loose the prop. Be sure they check the Hull for damage. A friend of mine had a similar hit and the damage to boat was worse then the shaft, prop, and rudder. Your insurance may cover some of the repair. Good luck getting back on the water ASAP |

Tyler - That was the first thing I thought of after I heard about the body.
The prop went straight into the rudder, and the shaft is still long enough to keep it from falling out all the way. There is damage to the prop, you just can't really see it in the pic. And there is also some fiberglass damage just above where the prop should be.
The repairs are being covered by insurance. It's at AWS right now, and they should be starting work on it tomorrow (insurance approved the repairs last night) so it should be done sometime next week. |

Had you ever hit anything before this happened? Last year ericsid lost a rudder without hitting anything. We started surfing and suddenly lost steering. Finally got the boat out of the water and the rudder shaft had sheared off. Clean break without hitting anything. After a closer look, it looked as though there was some residual damage to the rudder shaft from a previous incident. The shaft had been checked with no visible damage. But over time a slight defect slowly started to spread and finally the stress of the water flow snapped the shaft. You could actually see the defect in the shaft.
That is the only possible explanation I can come up with. Good luck with the repairs. |

| I had a very similar hit last year. Bent shaft, prop, and prop damage to the fiberglass. The repair was also covered by insurance... total was $3,400. The fiberglass repair (and it was small) cost almost 1/2 that total. I was amazed, but there was like 10 hours of labor just to fix that little scar. |

We did some minor damage to a prop last year, just enough to make it go out of balance.
With regards to this damage you can definitly see that the strut is bent when you looked at it. So even though there is a slight possibility of previous damage causing things to break down, I am still thinking it was the bent strut putting force on the shaft causing it to break.
I am just amazed at the cost to fix everything at $5500. Hopefully the boat will be done soon. Hate driving over the bridge and seeing glass knowing that I can't be on it right now. |
